Most UK patients who come to us for full-mouth implants are adults who have lost — or are on the verge of losing — the majority of their teeth and want something fixed and permanent rather than more dentures. One thing we always explain: your overall health matters more than your age. You need healthy gums and adequate jawbone, and your body must be able to grow bone around each implant (osseointegration) before the final teeth go on. The American Dental Association's patient resource makes this same point clearly.
Who may NOT be a suitable candidate (yet)
- •Uncontrolled diabetes or other healing-impairing conditions. Chronic illnesses such as poorly controlled diabetes can interfere with healing after surgery and reduce implant success — these need to be stabilised first.
- •Heavy smoking. Tobacco use slows healing and is associated with higher implant failure. Patients are strongly advised to stop, or significantly cut down, before and after surgery.
- •Insufficient bone volume. Long-term tooth loss causes the jawbone to shrink. Where there is too little bone to hold an implant securely, additional procedures may be required before placement.
- •Active gum disease or untreated infection. These must be resolved first so the implants integrate in a healthy environment.
We use a 3D CT scan alongside a full clinical assessment to determine whether you're ready to proceed. Patients who aren't immediately suitable very often become candidates after the right preparatory treatment.
Bone Grafting
Where the jaw has lost too much height or width to hold an implant securely, a bone graft rebuilds the ridge — either using your own bone or a biocompatible substitute. Grafted sites usually need several months to consolidate before we place the implants. The evidence on which augmentation technique performs best in different situations is still evolving, so we tailor the approach to each patient rather than applying a single formula.
Sinus Lift
In the upper back jaw, the sinus cavity sometimes sits too close to where an implant needs to be anchored. A sinus lift gently elevates the sinus membrane and packs bone material beneath it, creating the depth we need for a stable fixture. Planned properly, it's a well-established, routine procedure.
